When the World Unites …

The time has come….and, believe it or not, I am ready.

Supply of microwavable popcorn? Check.

Face paint? Check.

Large-screen television? Check.

Country flags? Check.

The goose bumps have started  ….. the 24 hour countdown until the start of the 2010 FIFA World Cup is in full effect!!!

It may seem distant for many Americans (even though our team HAS qualified for the tournament) but for the rest of the world, the World Cup is a chance for people from different countries, cultures, political views and economic situations to come together and scream, yell, cry and celebrate as one.

It is fitting that this year’s host is South Africa – and that an aging inspiration, Nelson Mandela, lived long enough to enjoy the spectacle.

Who could’ve imagined 20 years ago the South Africa of today? It’s a country crippled my massive economic, development, and public health concerns. But it is a country that has overcome, a country that has clung desperately to the hopes of progress despite horrible odds. A country, which despite its challenges, has persevered.

The teams I’ll be watching?

  1. South Africa
  2. United States
  3. Serbia
  4. North Korea
  5. Mexico

The team I want to win?

I’m going to double-dip here …. South Africa or the United States

Which team will win?

Probably not South Africa or the United States.

My pre-tournie prediction is The Netherlands.

Comment, email, or @ me on Twitter and let me know who you think will win!

  1. As they say on the ‘geek’ boards, “First!” 🙂

Ok, I’ll bite. This is who I think is playing well, going into this:

    1. Brazil
    2. Spain
    3. Argentina
    4. Chile

And of course I have a soft spot for the home side. I will be rooting hard and loud for South Africa.
